UNO
:: Object of the game
The object of Uno™ is to be the first person to score up to 500 points, Points are scored by getting rid of all cards in your hand before your opponent(s). You score points for cards left in your opponent(s) hands.
Please note however, on this stats database, the 500 points is voided.
There is currently no set limit to go up to, so players can achieve beyond 100,000 points for example.
:: Uno™ in brief
Once the pack (or deck as some call it) is shuffled, each player is dealt 7 cards with the remainder of the pack placed face down to form a draw pile.
The top card of the draw pile is turned over to begin a discard pile. The first player to go has to match the card in the discard pile either by number, color or symbol. For example, if the card is a red 7, the player must put down a red card, or any color 7 card (eg: A green 7). Alternatively, the player can put down a Wild card. (See special cards below)
If the player doesn't have a card to match the one on the discard pile, a card from the draw pile must then be picked up. If the card picked up can be played, the player is free to put it down in the same turn. Otherwise, play moves on to the next player. When a player has only one card left, they must yell "Uno™" (meaning "one").
Failure to do this results in them having to pick up two cards from the draw pile.
This is only nessary, though, if they are caught by one of the other players.
Please note, in this IRC version the Unobot will automatically say you have Uno™ when you are down to one card.
Once a player has no cards left, the game is then ended. Points are scored based on the cards the opponent(s) have in their hands. (See scoring below)
:: Rules of the game
Choosing a dealer, normally every player picks a card. The person who picks the highest number card deals. Special cards count as zero. On this version, the Unobot always deals the cards and play begins with the person that started the game.
Starting the discard pile, this is usually done once the hands are dealt, the card on the top of the remaining deck is turned up to begin the discard pile. However, the Unobot handles both the draw and discard piles.
:: Special cards
The functions of the special cards and when they should be played are below.
›› Draw Two
When this card is played, the next player to play must draw two cards and forfeit their turn. If turned up at the beginning of play, the same rule applies. This card can only be played on matching colors and other Draw Two cards.
›› Reverse
This simply reverses the direction of play. Play to the left changes direction to the right, and vice versa. The card may only be played on a matching color or on another reverse card.
›› Skip
The next player to player after this card has been put down loses their turn and is "skipped". The card may only be played on a matching color or on another skip card.
›› Wild
The person playing this card calls for any color to continue the play. A wild card can be played at any time, even if the player has another playable card in the hand.
›› Wild Draw Four
This used to be the best card to have. The person who plays it calls the color which continues play. Also, the next player has to draw four cards from the draw pile and forfeit their turn. Unfortunately, the card can only be played when the player holding it does not a playable card in their hand. (The card however, can be played at any time in this IRC version.)
›› Wild Draw Ten
This is the single best card to have. Whoever plays it, calls the color which continues play. Also, the next player has to draw not four, but ten cards from the draw pile, and forfeit their turn. Please note however, that this card does not exist in the original Uno™, or in any other version of Uno™. It is currently only available in this IRC version.
›› Wild Draw Infinite
This is soon to be the best card to have. Currently the rules are to be decided. But the next player can be assured they will get a rather large sum of cards.
›› Trade
This bot has a Trade card in which you can play. When played, you will be prompted to select a player to trade with. And then you get to choose the color. Note however, you can play the Trade card last to win the game, you are not forced to trade in the event it's your last card. It is currently only available in this IRC version.
›› Attack
The attack card, which is played as a Color, similar to a skip, or draw two. This card will attack the next player in line. This means the next player will lose all of their cards of that color. And then they will be give however many cards they lose, in new cards of random color, etc.. This however does not stop them from picking up cards of the same color so you should not rely on it heavily if that person has Uno.
Side Note: The Trade card and Attack card ideas are thanks to, and full credit goes to Ghozer from the irc.ForTheGamers.org Network. :)
:: Scoring
How does scoring work? It's easy. The first player to get rid of their cards wins the game, and receives points for cards the other opponent(s) still hold in their hand.
All number cards (0-9) are worth their face value (eg: Red 6 is worth 6 points).
A Draw Two, Reverse, or Skip is worth 20 points. And a Wild, Wild Draw Four, Wild Draw Ten, Trade, and Attack are worth 50 points each.
The Wild Draw Infinite will be worth around 100 points when it is finalized. (Probably never.)
:: Bonus points
In real Uno™ play, there are usually no bonus points.
But in IRC Uno™, players are sometimes rewarded with extra points at the end of the game for winning.
Every time a player wins, they have a 1-20 chance to hit a bonus.
This bonus ranges from small rewards, to large rewards being up to 1,000 points and over.
There is also, a secondary bonus in place, to where games played on a Friday will result in a 1-10 chance to hit a bonus rather then 1-20. There is also a minimum 500 point bonus applied.
As of November, 2007: The bot now has additional Time Bonuses as well. These time bonuses are applied for games under 40 seconds, and games over 10 minutes. The bonuses are at most, 200 points.
:: Penalties
Oh yes, there are penalties. Since this is IRC Uno™, the actual game penalties will be skipped.
Point penalty's will remove the number of points from the players total score.
If the player fails to play, draw or pass within 1 minute and 20 seconds, that player will be removed and their turn then forfeited and play resumes. If there is no other players, the game is ended. This is a 200 point penalty.
If the player leaves the channel or IRC network they have 1 minute to return and either play a card, draw one, or pass. If they fail to do so, they are considdered idle and receive a 200 point penalty.
Stopping or Ending the game in the middle of play will result in a 100 point penalty.
If you remove yourself from the game, you receive a 50 point penalty. If there are only 2 players total, you receive a 100 point penalty instead for stopping/ending the game, rather then a 50 point penalty.
:: The cards
There are by default, 108 cards in the Uno™ deck. With the added Wild Draw Ten's, there are 112 cards.
There are a total of 4 colors, being Red, Blue, Green, & Yellow. In addition, Special cards are black.
When the game begins, each player will be /noticed 7 cards. So pay attention! If you have a script or other modification running, these cards may not appear in the channel.
Each color has 4 each of the numbers from 0-9, Draw Two's, Reverses, & Skips. There is a total of 4 each of the Special cards (being Wild's, Wild Draw Ten's, and so on).
After taking a look at what cards you have, you can play a card. You can do this by typing p color card, for example, if you want to play a Red 7 card, you would type p r 7, to play a green 5, you would type p g 5.
If you do not have a card you can draw one by typing draw or just the letter d in the channel. If you get a card you can play, you can then play that card.
Playing a special card is the same as other cards, for example, to play a Wild Draw Four, you would type p wd4 and then the next player would then automatically draw four cards.
After doing this, the bot will ask you to choose a color. Available colors are Red, Blue, Green, & Yellow. To actually pick the color, you can type color red or color blue for example. If you want a shortcut way, you can type just c r to pick the color red and c b for the color blue and so on.
Tips & tricks
The best tip by far, is simply saving your special cards, being Wild's, Draw Two's and such. This may take awhile, but if you get the chance, and are down to just them, you can easy go out in a 1v1 game by comboing the cards.
Keeping Draw Two's, Wild Draw Four's and such will also give the player alot more cards right before you win. Thus giving you more points when you do win.
Be careful however, to make sure you'll go out, as that player could pick up a card to take you down and give you enough cards so that you wont win anytime soon.
This also has a slight downfall, because if you do save your good cards in an attempt to go out in a combo, it means another player is given the chance to win, and if they do, they will get alot more points from you then they would had you gotten rid of the cards. Note however, this is most effective in a 1v1 game.
Drawing when somebody is about to win or has Uno™ is also a good idea if you don't have any good cards. As you may pick up a Wild Draw Four, or Draw Two in the color you need. Even a Skip or Reverse may prolong it.
Another thing to do, is bluff. Get rid of cards in one color so that you only have maybe one or two cards left in that color. Switch to another color and get rid of all those cards, so you are left with the previous color you had. Sometimes people think you don't have that color, and will try to change it so you can't win, but instead they give you the color you want.
Also, one thing is also drawing when maybe you don't need to. Sometimes this can lure the player into thinking you don't have anything when you do.
There are many other tricks and tips to playing and winning Uno™, the above is just a few that could help you win or lose.
